Hi, which area of the country are you planning to go to and when? What kinds of things do you want to do there? Sri Lanka is a very beautiful country and there are lots of things to do and see.

For the first part of my trip, I travelled with a photographer to the East Coast for surfing and that was great. Then I travelled to the Ancient Cities region by myself. I had a tour guide/driver for that part. Then I spent a few more days in Colombo by myself and that was alright. I just walked everywhere or took tuk-tuks.

I definitely think it is easier to travel with a companion in Sri Lanka. My advice is to dress modestly (skirts past the knees and cover your shoulders). Also, try to get an Ayurvedic massage from a reputable place. If you do go with a tour guide, watch out for them taking you to sketchy places where they get a commission.

I recommend getting a copy of the Insight Guide to Sri Lanka and A Motorcycle Journey into the Heart of Sri Lanka’s Civil War, By Mark Stephan Meadows.

Hope this helps.

[...] Trudging up the beach with five local surfers, our surfboards and Sean’s camera gear, in search of waves for our photo shoot, we stumbled upon two snake charmers and their monkey. Two ragged wicker baskets, resembling tortilla holders, sat inconspicuously on the sand. One of the gypsies sat cross-legged, forming a triangle with the baskets. Off to the right the monkey jumped up and down, eyes darting in all directions. The other gypsy, with longer hair, stood about five steps back with a python dangling from his neck.
